“If you tour these schools, the language they use isn’t as blunt, for lack of a better word, but they do talk about, ‘This is where you make lifelong friendships,’” said Alina Adams, an education consultant, of Manhattan private schools. “They wouldn’t be so tacky as to put it into such mercenary terms.”

Adams once encouraged her son to reach out to a classmate’s father, who worked in a field he was interested in pursuing, for an informational interview. “It’s not just the kids you go to school with, it’s their parents,” she noted.
