2027 Getting into NYC Kindergarten: Public, Private, Charter & Gifted

The 2027 School Admissions Season has officially begun!

Hunter College Elementary School opened their application on September 1. (Do you know the optimal date for your child to take their test? What’s the difference between First and Second round? How do teacher and parent evaluations factor in?)

All private schools opened their applications the Tuesday after Labor Day. (How is the admissions process different? What age must your child be to start Kindergarten? Is there financial aid available?)

Public schools will open their applications on December 9. (What’s the difference between zoned and unzoned schools? How do Dual Language programs work? Where is your lottery number? How can you prove your child is gifted for G&T programs?)

And where do charter schools fit in among all of the above?
